OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Upgrades are coming to the wastewater treatment plant on North Campbell Road in Oshkosh.
The city broke ground on work for the tertiary filtration project. The new filtration devices will reduce phosphorous discharge into the Fox River. Chlorine disinfection devices will be replaced with ultraviolet disinfection devices.
City workers expect the change over to UV disinfection to help reduce algae in Lake Winnebago.
“This really stems from the fact that Lake Winnebago is listed as an impaired water body,” said Oshkosh Director of Engineering and Utilities James Rabe. “That’s really what we’re doing. We’re trying to remove one of those key nutrients that causes those algal blooms.”
The June project is separate from a project which began last month. That project is designed to ensure there is clean, safe, and reliable drinking water in Oshkosh. The June project focuses squarely on discharging safe water back into Lake Winnebago.
The filtration portion of the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. It’s expected to be fully completed by Spring 2028.
