(WNFL/WIAA) – The Kaulauna Ghosts in their first WIAA state baseball appearance since 1954 won their first state title since 1953 with an 11-5 win over Madison Memorial at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute on Thursday.
Kaukauna (24-7) fell behind 4-1 after 2 1/2 innings but bounced back with 5 runs to take the lead for good in their half of the third inning.
The Ghosts scored their runs during the rally on a double by Tyler Urban, a 2-run single by Bron Schaefer and a 2-run single by Brayden Jenkins.
Kaukauna added 3 more runs in the fifth inning on a 2-run double by Kaden Kress and a run-scoring single by Quentin Gustman.
Schaefer’s single in the sixth inning added 2 more runs.
Madison Memorial scored a run in the seventh inning before Paxton Schuh struck out Blake Adams for the final out.
Kress and Blake Vandeloo both had 3 hits for Kaukauna with Kress driving in 3 runs. Vandeloo scored 3 times. Schaefer had 2 hits, scored twice and drove in 3.
Bennett Geitner started and went 4 innings, allowing 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks. It was only his second start of the season.
Schuh who had missed the last 4 weeks with a torn meniscus and was told earlier in the week that there was only a 2 percent chance he’d be able to play, pitched the final 3 innings to get the save. He allowed 1 run on 2 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 4.
Adams took the loss for Madison Memorial which finishes with a 22-8 record.
