(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) STORRS, CONN – The Marquette University track and field team opened competition at the 2026 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Sherman Sports Complex on Thursday with a strong showing in the combined events and throws, highlighted by three men sitting in scoring position through five events of the decathlon and a top-five finish in the women’s hammer throw.
“We had a very solid day one. I was happy with how we handled the delays due to weather, and once we got out there we competed our tails off. I’m excited to take that momentum to tomorrow!” Director of Track and Field & Cross Country Bert Rogers said.
Senior Gus Kasun leads the way for the Golden Eagles in the decathlon after day one, sitting in third place with 3,460 points, while senior Cole Donahe is fifth with 3,338 points and junior Henrik Rosario is sixth with 3,256 points. The trio posted consistent performances across the board, beginning with Kasun finishing second in the 100-meter dash in 11.31 seconds, while Rosario (11.52) and Donahe (11.54) followed closely behind. Rosario then took second in the long jump with a leap of 6.66 meters, while Kasun placed third at 6.39 meters.
Kasun added a season-best throw of 12.19 meters in the shot put to finish fourth, while Rosario also recorded a season-best mark of 11.97 meters to take fifth. In the high jump, Donahe cleared a personal-best 1.80 meters to finish fourth, while Kasun added another season-best effort at 1.77 meters. The group closed the day on the track as Donahe took second in the 400 meters in 50.52 seconds, Kasun placed third in 50.88 and Rosario crossed in 54.55.
On the women’s side, sophomore Libby McCarthy sits seventh in the heptathlon with 2,666 points after four events, on pace to set a new personal record. McCarthy opened her day with a personal-best time of 15.85 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and later added another personal record in the 200 meters at 26.42 seconds. She also posted a fourth-place clearance of 1.58 meters in the high jump and a mark of 8.94 meters in the shot put.
In the field events, sophomore Ally Broaddus led Marquette in the women’s hammer throw with a fourth-place finish at 49.20 meters to score five team points, using a huge final throw to move into fourth just off of the podium, while junior Megan White added a 12th-place mark of 44.35 meters. On the men’s side, junior Sebastian Kubas scored two points with a seventh-place throw of 50.84 meters in the hammer, using a big final throw to get into scoring position, while junior Kyle Forsberg (48.30 meters) and freshman Sam Crane (47.41 meters) also competed.
Marquette returns to action Friday afternoon for day two of the 2026 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships, starting with the multi-events at 11 a.m. CT.
