FREMONT, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The village of Fremont has been working on cleanup efforts for the past week. On Saturday, nearly 90,000 sandbags were cleared from the community.
And on Sunday, the work continued. Village hall was hit hard by the rising water. All the floors had to be torn up. The library’s collection needed to be transferred to the gym.
But the community was ready to help.
“We have a lot of volunteers, even some of the kids came in to help,” said Stacy Landaal with Jack’s Maintenance Service. “Even some other, people that are from around who have cabins around came to volunteer to help us.”
Village President Nicki Scott was among those helping.
“We already moved our clerk’s office over to town hall last week, I don’t even know what day it is, maybe last weekend,” Scott said.
As the days blend together, Scott said the response from the community has been instrumental in recovery efforts.
“It’s been the most surreal and weighing ten days of my life. Seeing everybody out here is incredible,” she said. “I couldn’t do it without Wolf River Fire Department, Fremont Fire Department, Emergency Management from the county, Sheriff’s Office, Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office, and the thousands of volunteers that have come from Fremont, out of state, and everywhere in between.”
Water is still standing around lower roads in Fremont. Regardless, residents like Roy Toepke are eager to return to their day-to-day lives.
“Cleanup in the basement, and hopefully the downtown businesses can get back to normal. If anybody’s in the area and looking for place to come and spend some money, this would be a great place to do it. They certainly have been hurt,” he said.
Let’s Meat, the grocery store in Fremont which has been providing meals to those in need, is looking for volunteers to help with donations.
