Eric Abresch (Outagamie Co. Jail)
APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Eric Abresch was sentenced Wednesday to 12 years in prison for supplying the drugs used in a fatal overdose in Appleton.
Abresch, 40, was also placed on extended supervision for eight years by Judge Yadira Rein. He was convicted of first-degree reckless homicide for the August 2022 death of 42-year-old Dawn Hiles in the 500 block of E. Winnebago Street.
Julius Elmer, who allegedly provided the drugs to Abresch, is also charged in the case. He has a plea hearing scheduled for May 29.
Before the sentence was issued, Abresch apologized, saying while he can’t change what he did, he can change how he acts in the future.
“I just want the victim’s family to know I am truly sorry. She was a good friend of mine. I cared about her kid very much. This wasn’t just some random person,” he said.
According to the criminal complaints, police entered the apartment and found Hiles unresponsive. Abresch admitted to police he was the one who called 911 to report Hiles needed medical attention. He denied giving her drugs and said he tried to help her.
Her cause of death was listed as “acute mixed drug (Acetylfentanyl, Alprazolam and Fentanyl) toxicity,” the complaint states.
Abresch is currently housed at the Jackson Correctional Institution for other drug cases. This sentence is consecutive to those cases.
