MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Gov. Tony Evers vetoed a bill that would have opted Wisconsin into a nationwide private school voucher program.
The program is part of the “Big Beautiful Bill” President Donald Trump signed last year. Under the law, individuals can receive up to $1,700 in tax credits when they donate money toward organizations that provide private school tuition scholarships.
The law also allowed states to opt out of the tax credits.
In his veto message, Evers said he was concerned about the cost of the program as well as accountability.
“This nationwide voucher program has no student achievement metrics, no school accountability measures, no minimum or maximum scholarship size, no certain end date, and no cap on how much the federal government can spend,” he wrote.
Evers is a former public school teacher and superintendent of the state Department of Public Instruction.
