GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is alerting motorists about four construction projects that will affect travel on the west side of Green Bay.
Officials say the projects are “aimed at preserving and enhancing key infrastructure along the I-41 corridor, interchange ramps and adjacent routes.” The initiatives will extend the lifespan of the roadway and ramp structures, improve ride quality and address pavement and structural needs, according to authorities.
“WisDOT is committed to maintaining safe and reliable transportation networks for Wisconsin residents and visitors,” said WisDOT Brown County Project Manager Josh Lang in a news release. “These projects represent proactive investments in our infrastructure. We encourage the public to visit the new websites, learn about the proposed work and provide feedback to help shape the final designs. Also, motorists should carefully review construction details for work this year on the I-41 ramps.”
Project Development Supervisor Andrew Fulcer said, “This is something that is part of our plan to do as part of our normal life cycle of concrete pavement out there. There’s no issues out there other than just general rehabilitation and maintaining what we have.”
Below is more information about each project, as described as WisDOT:
I-41 Flyover Bridge Deck Overlays
This project focuses on the I-41 and WIS 29/32 and I-41 and I-43 system interchanges, with construction scheduled from summer 2026 to summer 2027. The goal is to extend the life of the system interchange flyover ramp bridge structures through milling portions of the decks, performing necessary repairs and applying polyester polymer concrete (PPC) overlays. Improvements will cover six interchange flyover ramp bridges in Brown County and one additional flyover ramp bridge in Winnebago County at the I-41 and US-45 system interchange.
Anticipated traffic impacts include long-term single lane closures on dual-lane flyover ramps, closures and detours of single-lane flyover ramps and a closure and detour of the WIS 54/Mason Street ramp during work on the I-41 northbound/WIS 32 northbound to WIS 29 westbound/WIS 32 northbound over I-41/WIS 29 flyover ramp.
“We are going to mill that off, do any necessary repairs to the surface of the deck and then we’ll be placing a new surface treatment,” said Fulcer. “We’re hoping to extend the life of these bridge decks and then looking to minimize the amount of maintenance-type work we have to do on them for, I mean, for hopefully several decades.”
I-41 Bridge Approach Replacements
Scheduled for construction in 2027, this project addresses settlement at I-41 bridge approaches over Parkview Road, Oneida Street and the WIS 29 eastbound to I-41 southbound ramp in Brown County. The purpose is to restore ride quality by replacing existing asphalt approach slabs with concrete ones, extending up to approximately 600 feet of additional pavement for smooth transitions.
Traffic impacts will involve long-term lane closures on I-41 with traffic shifts, reducing the highway to two lanes in both directions between Glory Road and Hansen Road overpasses. Long-term ramp closures and detours are planned for the County AAA/Oneida Street northbound off-ramp, County AAA/Oneida Street southbound on-ramp and County G/GF/Main Ave. northbound on-ramp. The WIS 29 eastbound/WIS 32 southbound ramp to I-41/WIS 32 southbound will be reduced to one lane.
I-41 Roadway and Structure Preservation
Construction is slated for 2029 along the stretch from Little Rapids Road to Harbor Lights Road in Brown County. The project aims to preserve and restore the I-41 corridor, which was reconstructed and expanded from 2011 to 2016. Improvements include 13.6 miles of concrete pavement repair and patching (covering many interchange ramps and terminals), drainage preservation and restoration (such as culverts, storm sewers, and inlets), secondary structure repairs like sealing surfaces and joints, fixing spalling and delamination, spot painting, upgrading pedestrian facilities and curb ramps to meet current ADA standards and other miscellaneous repairs along the corridor and at park-and-ride lots. Traffic will experience various temporary lane, shoulder and ramp closures.
WIS 32 Pavement Preservation
Set for 2031 from Mason Street to County FF in Brown County, this project will preserve and restore the portion of WIS 32 that runs parallel to I-41 and WIS 29, originally reconstructed with the I-41 corridor from 2011 to 2016. Proposed work includes 2.3 miles of concrete pavement repair and patching (including the County EB/Packerland and WIS 29/32 and I-41 interchanges), drainage preservation and restoration, secondary structure repairs such as sealing, fixing spalling and delamination, spot painting, upgrading pedestrian facilities and curb ramps to ADA standards and other miscellaneous improvements. Anticipated traffic impacts consist of temporary lane, shoulder and ramp closures.
Public input is invited
Websites for each project offers the public a chance to review detailed plans and submit their comments on the project scopes.
Fulcer said, “Certainly, we understand that there’s going to be impacts from a traffic perspective to the traveling public and to local businesses. We’d be looking for any feedback they have, any certain needs that are out there that maybe we haven’t had a chance to account for yet.”
