The Cheesehead Invitational wrestling tournament wrapped up yesterday at Kaukauna and as always the event was well run and filled with exciting matches.
Now as we head into the the meat of the prep wrestling season, let's find out who is ranked where according to Wiwrestling.com.
In Division 2, the Wrightstown Tigers are ranked No. 1 with fellow North Eastern Conference team Denmark ranked No. 2.
Luxemburg-Casco is ranked eighth with Chilton/Hilbert ranked tenth.
I don't have access to all the records but I'm guessing this is one of the few times – if not the first time – that three teams from the same conference have been ranked in the top ten.
In Division 3, Coleman has moved up a notch to No. 2, right behind Fennimore. The Cougars have flip-flopped with Stratford for that No. 2 spot.
Random Lake is fourth, Brillion seventh and Reedsville tenth.
In Division 1, Stoughton remains locked in at No. 1 with Mukwonago second and Kaukauna third.
De Pere climbed four notches to No. 5 with Kimberly seventh and Ashwaubenon eighth.
While a lot of folks feel that the Christmas/New Year's school break should mean all quiet around the schools with no athletic events, that would mean the elimination of a lot of great wrestling tournaments.
The Lourdes Academy On The Water tournament brings hundreds of wrestlers to the Kolf Sports Center. The Bi-State Classic in La Crosse, the Mid-States Wrestling Classic at UW-Whitewater, the Northern Exposure Invitational in Merrill, the Old Abe Holiday Duals in Eau Claire and the Ripon Holiday Scramble.
Yes, it can be a pain in the backside for schools to open up the building, get proper staffing for the concession stands, get the cleaning crews in and properly execute the event but most of the competitors would be greatly disappointed if these events went away.
