DAIRY NEWS – Maximizing a cow’s health and performance throughout her productive life is critically important to a dairy farm’s productivity and profitability. Ensuring that every member of a dairy’s team is following management strategies to protect herd health and understands potential obstacles is crucial.
The 2024 Herdsperson Conference presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDP) is a one-day event featuring leading herd-health experts and top dairy producers. Designed to provide actionable strategies and insights that conference attendees can implement quickly and effectively, the program will also feature simultaneous translation into Spanish for all sessions.
Two repeating sessions of the workshop will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Food + Farm Exploration Center in Plover, Wis., and again on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Arlington Research Station Public Events Building in Arlington, Wis. Registration begins each day at 10:00 a.m. with the program concluding at 3:30 p.m.
“Implementing effective biosecurity measures at the farm level is more and more important for the dairy industry, and the first step is understanding how germs and diseases spread – so we can mitigate the damage done to the herd’s wellbeing,” said John Haag, president of PDP board of directors and Dane, Wis., dairy producer. “Attending this workshop is an investment in a dairy operation’s herd health and bottom line.”
Conference sessions will include:
- “Protect cows and profits with biosecurity,” presented by Dr. Keith Poulsen, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, director of the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Dr. Poulsen will uncover the hidden threats that can compromise animal health and review critical control points and biosecurity measures to protect your farm’s health and bottom line.
- “Proactively maximize cow health,” presented by Dr. Lautaro Rostoll-Cangiano, PhD, assistant professor in bovine immunology at UW-Madison, will focus on select dietary formulations and management practices shown to reduce disease incidence during the critical transition period.
- “Unlock the secrets to herd longevity with insights from top U.S. dairy farmers,” panel discussion featuring Mitch Breunig, Mystic Valley Dairy; Tony Brey, Brey Cycle Farm; and Corey Hodorff, Second Look Holsteins LLC. This panel of dairy farmers, known globally for top-rated genetics, will discuss the impact of environmental factors, cow health and sustainability traits on long-term herd success and share ideas and strategies to empower attendees to strengthen their own herd’s longevity.
