GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — With Green Bay Police focusing heavily on traffic enforcement this year, the department made an effort Thursday to step up patrols around school zones.
Officer Darryl Robinson is a seven year veteran of the department, and WTAQ joined him as he patrolled the school zone on Shawano Avenue, right in front of Green Bay West High School.
“There are certain spots in the city where you don’t even put it in park and you’re pulling people over,” Robinson said.
Moments later, just before 3:30, that was the case. We barely had time to set up our equipment before a driver was caught doing over 30 in the 15 mile per hour school zone.
In the hour we traveled with Robinson, three people were stopped on Shawano alone.
“It’s a big safety thing,” said Robinson. “That kid is playing with his dog, that ball might roll into the road and the kid might chase it. It’s a huge safety concern when kids are around.”
Robinson made three stops during his patrol in the area of Green Bay West High School, all of them were for going more than 15 mph over the school zone speed limit.
“There will be some people who just go flying,” Robinson told WTAQ. “Either they’re not paying attention, or don’t realize it.”
The enforcement was part of the department’s “Slow Down! Green Bay” accident prevention effort.
