OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – There is a renewed effort to push UW-Oshkosh to reinstate its men’s soccer team. The university acknowledges the discussion, but says nothing is imminent.
The men’s soccer team was disbanded in 2015 as a budget measure, as well as the men’s tennis team.
According to the “Bring Back UW-Oshkosh Men’s Soccer” Facebook page, there are discussions about the team returning.
“While the program was previously disbanded and the past decade has held its challenges, our new chancellor has shown strong interest in reviving the team with fresh energy, improved structure, and meaningful updates. Your voice can help demonstrate that the soccer community is ready to support this return in a positive, forward-thinking way,” the post states.
It also asks people to fill out a survey about the possible return.
A UWO spokesman provided a statement:
“UW-Oshkosh is continuously examining the landscape within the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and beyond to assess student interest in new championship sports programs. This includes men’s soccer; however, no decisions on that sport have been made at this time.”
