LAKE WINNEBAGO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A quarter of the way into the sturgeon spearing season, activity remains slow.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says 35 sturgeon were speared on Tuesday. Fifteen of those were speared on Lake Winnebago and 20 on upriver lakes Poygan, Winneconne and Butte des Morts.
On the upriver lakes, four of the sturgeon were adult females, bringing the season total 42 away from the 90% harvest cap that would trigger the end of the season. The DNR expects the season to go for a while, possibly the full 16 days.
The largest sturgeon of the day was 104.7 pounds and 72.8 inches long, and was registered at Stockbridge Harbor by Lance Olson.
Mayson Muche speared the largest sturgeon of the day on the upriver lakes. He registered his 75.4-pound, 66.3-inch fish at Critter’s.
