FOX VALLEY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new group aims to preserve and clean little Lake Butte des Morts in the Fox Valley.
“We’re organizing homeowners and people that support the lake,” said Little Lake Butte des Morts group organizing committee member Steve Erb. “[They] want to see improvements in terms of water quality, recreational opportunities, waterfront rights that are infringed when the water is high. So, it’s lake improvement efforts, whether it’s recreational or quality improvements.”
The improvement efforts include algae growth and general aquatic plant overgrowth. The group can pool resources to make the efforts more practical and cost-effective, according to Erb.
“Even minor efforts, like facilitating or organizing aerators for people to have on their docks to help keep the algae moving,” said Erb.
The group was born out of the Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance, the cities of Menasha and Neenah and the village of Fox Crossing. Neenah has committed money to get the group going, according to Erb, and Menasha budgeted $5,000 for the project.
“It’s important that we have a group like this. The Little Lake Butte des Morts Lake Association that’s taking form tonight to be that advocacy group and that voice,” said Menasha Mayor Austin Hammond. “For the city of Menasha, it means preserving clean, accessible water for generations to come, which is imperative to who we are and the identity of our city of being ‘Your place on the water.'”
The rest of the funds come from the $25 membership fee and possibly some additional grants.
