(WTAQ) — There are now over 1,900 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 Coronavirus in the state of Wisconsin. That was confirmed Friday by state health officials. The 1,916 cases confirmed Friday represent a 186 case jump from Thursday afternoon, when the count stood at 1,730.
There are 24 cases of the virus in Brown County and 19 in Outagamie County, where a death was reported Friday afternoon.
But in those numbers there is a glimmer of hope–a sign that the pandemic curve in Wisconsin is flattening.
“The fact that we’re seeing the number of cases go up by the same amount every day–180, 190–is actually very good news,” Bureau of Infectious Diseases Dr. Ryan Westergaard said in a Friday press conference. “It’s very encouraging [and shows] we are flattening the curve.”
He says it would be more concerning if cases were doubling every day.
“We know what this virus can do, we know how quickly it can spread,” Westergaard said. “We know when people interact in a normal way how quickly this can really take over a population rapidly.”
37 people are dead, an increase of six over Thursday. 22,377 people have tested negative.
Governor Tony Evers has called lawmakers to Madison for a special session with aims of making additional changes to the April 7th election, including extending the absentee voting period through May.
