OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – High school fall sports are not back on the docket. At least, not yet. But they also haven’t been officially canceled.
We reported last week that the WIAA was moving forward with fall sports and summer contact days. But Oshkosh West Athletic Director Brad Jodarski says that’s not actually the case.
“There’s nothing new that’s been provided from them to us in regards to July contact days or fall sports,” Jodarski tells WTAQ News, “Everything is still in a wait and see pattern. We’re hopeful that things are going to improve to the point where we’ll be able to have some type of contact for coaches and students maybe in July…Hopefully that moves forward with having fall sports from schools re-opening but all of that is still up in the air at this time.”
The WIAA is working with the Department of Health, Department of Public Instruction, and governor’s office to find guidance on when returning to the field could be appropriate – and safe.
“I know a lot of different people are working on a plan – and there are a lot of people hoping that we’re going to be able to do some things in the near future – but everything is day by day basically right now,” Jodarski says, “For all of our kids that are fall athletes, I hope we’re in school – and I hope we have fall activities. Sports, music, drama, forensics – all of that stuff is an important part of the kids high school experience and I’m hopeful we can find a way to make that happen.”
In a statement over the weekend, the WIAA Executive Staff reports that nothing has been canceled – but the status can change as other developments surrounding the virus might emerge. They also commented that they hope students will return to schools this fall, and that they will do their best to have a plan and guidance in place for teams to decide if they can resume sports and other activities.
