TWO RIVERS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Two people are in custody in connection with the death of a person whose body was discovered in the water near a Two Rivers marina.
Police say they were called to the Seagull Marina, 1400 Lake St., Friday evening. The body was found near the marina on the south side of the Lake Michigan harbor.
Since then, police have been working to process evidence, conduct interviews and follow up on information. As a result of the investigation, one person was arrested Friday. Police also discovered that a second suspect was already in custody in an unrelated case.
Police also said closures of Zander Park and the Ice Age Trail over the weekend were connected to the investigation. Those areas have since reopened to the public.
Investigators say the person’s death is an isolated incident and there is no known threat to the public. They say they did not release more information over the weekend because they “did not want to cause undue fear or draw people to areas of the investigation.”
Police also warned of what they called misinformation being shared on social media regarding the possible victim and suspects. They also said GoFundMe fundraisers misrepresented the situation.
“Please be aware that anyone can create these pages with the potential to defraud others,” Chief Ben Meinnert wrote in a social media post. “We would like to remind everyone that we remain the sole source of factual information in this investigation and will release more information and updates when they are available to share.”
No court appearances in the case are expected on Monday.
