Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich
GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich held a media roundtable Wednesday morning, about two weeks after announcing that he will not seek another term.
Mayor Genrich says he’s open to what his future holds, and although he isn’t ruling anything out, it’s likely we won’t see him on future ballots.
“I’ve spent the bulk of my career working on public policy at the state and local levels. So it’s something I care a great deal about. I’m definitely considering positions that are still in the policy world.”
Before being elected Mayor in 2019, Genrich served as a Democrat in the state Legislature. Now he says he prefers to work at the local level, and touted some of the work he accomplished in Green Bay. That includes a deal on relocation of the coal piles, economic development, and housing.
“Housing units that we produced, especially over the last four years, market rate and in the affordable category; a lot of work still needs to be done there. But I feel really good about some of the work that’s been done in that area.”
Between now and April, Mayor Genrich says he’ll continue to work towards bringing the United Soccer League to Green Bay and finding a stadium location for men’s and women’s teams.
Looking ahead to the April election, so far former Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmidt and current Green Bay City Council President Alyssa Proffitt have announced their candidacies. Council member Kathy Hinkfuss is also considering running and will announce a decision soon.
Mayor Genrich’s former chief of staff and current State Rep. Amaad Rivera-Wagner has also said he is thinking about running, but right now is focused on his reelection in the Assembly.
Mayor Genrich didn’t make any endorsements Wednesday morning, but said his successor should be future-driven.
“Someone who is interested in building upon the work that we’ve done over the last seven and a half years. Obviously they don’t have to be a mirror image of me politically or philosophically, but I’d think that people in Green Bay are interested in somebody who wants to move the city forward, not back.”
Candidates have until January 5 to file their paperwork to run for mayor.
The election will be April 6, 2027. If necessary, a primary would be February 16, 2027.
