DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — De Pere celebrated its first community fridge, offering a new lifeline for neighbors in need.
De Pere Christian Outreach held a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday for a shared fridge at its food pantry location at 1827 Chicago Street.
Located just outside the De Pere Christian Outreach Food Pantry entrance, the Community Fridge and Shared Shelf will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, helping make food more accessible for the community whenever it’s needed.
The fridge will be supported and monitored by the team of volunteers that staff the food pantry. Community members are welcome to donate food at any time. Guidelines for donations are located on-site.
The fridge will offer items like: Sealed snacks, pasteurized milk, cooked eggs, yogurt, cheese, deli meat, bread/baked goods, frozen meals and will accept prepared meals clearly labeled w/all ingredients and date it was prepared.
The shelf includes dry good items like noodles and cereal, non-perishable canned items like fruits, vegetables and protein, personal hygiene items and plastic utensils.
The addition of the Community Fridge and Shared Shelf does not affect the daily operations of the Food Pantry. The pantry will continue to assist low-income De Pere families that apply.
