(WTAQ-WLUK) — President Donald Trump approved $22.6 million in federal aid for Northeast Wisconsin. The money comes after multiple disaster declaration requests made earlier this year by Governor Tony Evers, Wisconsin’s entire delegation to the U.S. House and Senator Tammy Baldwin. Senator Ron Johnson did not sign on to that letter, however President Trump and Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson credited him for the funds.
Historic floods impacted Outagamie County and Waupaca County in April, including places like Shiocton, Fremont, Clintonville, and New London.
FEMA assessed the damage at the start of May.
Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson praised the funding approval on X. He wrote in part, “This aid will make a monumental difference for communities like Shiocton whose losses totaled twice their annual tax levy.”
Earlier in the day Tuesday, Congressman Tony Wied, R-8th District wrote in part, “I look forward to seeing these much-needed funds delivered to communities across #WI08 very soon.”
Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-7th District and Republican candidate for Governor also posted about the approval writing in part, “When severe weather hit Wisconsin, I called the White House to help secure the federal support our state needs.”
Governor Tony Evers took a more skeptical view of the announcement saying in part, “President Trump and the Trump administration have declined tens of millions of dollars in Wisconsin disaster relief requests and have been playing politics by withholding emergency FEMA assistance from states across our country.” Evers statement ends saying, “So, Wisconsinites and I will believe it when we see it.” President Trump is being sued by 22 states including Wisconsin for allegations of withholding disaster relief funds.
