GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — With an extreme heat warning in effect across the state, Wisconsin Public Service is reminding customers of simple steps they can take to stay safe, cool and manage their bills.
An Extreme Heat Warning was issued from noon Monday through 7 p.m. Tuesday. Heat index values forecast to soar into the 100s.
WPS says it has all available power plants ready to meet increased demand, and crews are prepared to respond if severe weather causes power outages.
Meeting peak demand
WPS power generation and distribution systems are designed to keep energy flowing when power demand is at its highest. The company uses an “all of the above” power generation approach — that includes natural gas, solar and wind generation — to make sure customers’ air conditioners, fans and cooling equipment can run around the clock.
Customer energy saving tips
As the weather warms up, customer energy use also increases. But the hot weather does not need to lead to bill shock. Here are some no-cost and low-cost energy saving strategies to help customers stay cool and save money.
No cost
- Close blinds, shades and drapes on the sunny side of your home during the day to keep rooms cooler.
- When at home, set the thermostat to the highest comfortable temperature to save energy. When you are away, adjust it higher than your normal setting to use less energy.
- Delay heat-producing chores. Wait until the evening or when it gets cooler to do things like cooking, laundry or running the dishwasher. That can reduce indoor heat and help your air conditioner work more efficiently.
- Enroll in Budget Billing. Budget Billing lets customers know what their bill will be each month. It can help reduce the impact of seasonal weather changes that affect your bill.
Low cost
- Seal air leaks. Use weather stripping or caulk to seal cracks and gaps around windows, doors and siding. This keeps cool air in and hot air out.
- Use fans, even if you have air conditioning. Distributing air makes rooms feel cooler. Remember to turn off the fans when you leave the room.
- Install a programmable or smart thermostat. They can automatically adjust your cooling settings when you are home or away. Our partners at Focus on Energy have great product options and rebates.
- Clean air filters help HVAC systems and air conditioners run efficiently and can lower energy use up to 15%. Check your filter every 30 days and especially when the system is heavily used, such as during hot summer and cold winter months. If the filter is dirty, replace it if disposable, or clean it if permanent.
