GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new and improved St. Vincent de Paul thrift store is open on Green Bay’s east side.
Officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday to celebrate the shop’s move from its previous location at 920 Weise Street to the former Planet Fitness building at 1831 Main Street. The gym closed its doors in 2021.
“It was a risk, a challenge, a wonder. Why would we move our flagship store to a different location? But we have noticed some statistical downtick of visitors at our current location and we are trying to be proactive,” said Bill Gosse, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul Green Bay.
SVDP purchased the building last fall and quickly began interior demolition. Additions include a donation canopy and drive-thru in front of the store, loading dock, walls to designate retail from merchandise processing and five fitting rooms, along with other upgrades like paint, fixtures and flooring.
“When you look around at the street out there and you have three prongs coming together and over 18,000 vehicles that pass here on a regular day, reportedly, that is a big thing, because we’re going to get spontaneous shoppers here that we did not get in a business park over there,” said Gosse.
The Weise Street location will continue to house SVDP’s business offices, central processing and resource center and add the discount Dig & Save operation at 2121 Van Deuren Street. Several retail-focused teammates and volunteers will transfer to the Main Street site. SVDP said no job reductions will occur and volunteer opportunities remain at both locations.
