NEW LONDON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Signs of life returned to downtown New London Wednesday as the city implemented its re-entry plan following a week’s worth of severe flooding.
As of noon, the downtown area is back open to the public. It is accessible via Shawano Street from the north and the Pearl Street bridge from the south.
The city shared other details of its re-entry plan online, including traffic flow information and restrictions for entering New London’s only still-flooded neighborhood.
That is the area west of Shawano Street, between North Street and North Water Street. It is only open to residents of that neighborhood and authorized individuals and companies assisting in cleanup. The only entry/exit point to the flooded area is at the intersection of Shawano Street and Waupaca Street. Vehicles can only enter traveling south on Shawano Street north from Waupaca Street and only exit on Shawano Street going south from Waupaca Street.
Officials say all vehicles entering the flooded area will be processed at a checkpoint traveling south on Shawano Street at Waupaca Street. An “entry pass” will be issued after a photograph is taken of all adult occupants in the vehicle, along with their identification and/or the vehicle license plate.
Checkpoint operations will be staffed by personnel from New London.
The Shawano Street bridge remains closed and North Water Street is inaccessible from County S.
“The purpose of this plan is to safeguard the welfare and property of residents impacted by the flooding in the city of New London by only allowing access to the flooded areas to individuals and companies necessary to cleanup operations. You will not be allowed to enter if you do not have a purpose there,” the city said.
On Wednesday, New London students and staff also returned to in-person learning.
The New London Area Chamber Foundation announced Tuesday it has partnered with the city to establish a dedicated fund to support those affected by the flooding. 100% of donations will go directly back to New London residents, businesses and nonprofit organizations to aid in recovery and rebuilding.
