SHIOCTON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — While the flood water continues to recede in Shiocton, officials are working to get the village ready for evacuated residents to return.
Outagamie County executive Tom Nelson says he expects the village to go from moderate flooding status to minor flooding status by Thursday.
All schools, the fitness center and the Shiocton Child Care Center will be closed through Friday, April 24.
“This is far from an easy decision, but it is necessary for the safety of students, staff, and community. The waters are receding at a slow pace, but the village is still under an emergency evacuation. There is work to do to check the damage, evaluate the building, clear debris, and ensure the infrastructure can handle students and staff returning in-person. We have a large number of students and staff displaced, who need to focus on their safety, loved ones, and the condition of their homes,” Shiocton school superintendent, Garrett Zimmerman, wrote Monday.
At this time, Nelson could not give a re-entry date as officials need to do damage assessments to ensure safety before residents can return to their homes.
While residents wait, they are encouraged to dial 2-1-1 or go online to report how they have been affected by flooding so the village can use those impact statements for help from FEMA and other sources.
The county also says it expects to announce the location of the MARC (Multi-Agency Resource Center) which will bring all resources to one place. These include Post Office, DMV, financial help, questions, legal information, food, health, religious, mental health, clothing, clean up, housing and more.
