(ST NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) MILWAUKEE – St. Norbert College got back to the .500 mark on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Alverno College by scores of 15-5 and 18-7 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action at Alverno Softball Field.
The Green Knights (13-13, 5-5 NACC) capitalized on 12 hits and five walks to plate 15 runs in the opener.
Morgan Jarvi’s run-scoring single, Grendel Sprong’s RBI groundout and a two-run home run by Ava Engwall (pictured) highlighted a four-run first inning. The Green Knights doubled their lead in the second inning when Jarvi forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk, another RBI groundout by Sprong, Elly Kirst scoring on an Allison Ardito sacrifice and an Emma Schmidt groundout.
Alverno would answer with five runs on two home runs in the bottom of the second inning to cut the deficit to 8-5, but the Green Knights got most of that back with a four-run third inning. Magdeline Hanmann led off with a home run, while Kirst followed moments later with a two-run shot of her own. Ardito’s RBI single finished the scoring that inning. St. Norbert then picked up three runs in the fourth inning, with Kirst driving in a pair with a single and Jarvi scoring Kirst with a double.
Kirst finished 3-for-3 with four runs scored and four runs batted in, while Jarvi was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Morgan Hansel was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Amber Johanek picked up the win with 3 1/3 innings pitched of scoreless relief, allowing two hits with two strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Green Knights took a 4-0 lead in the first inning after an Alverno error and two walks led to Engwall crushing a grand slam to account for the scoring. St. Norbert then had an 12-run uprising in the third inning, keyed by 10 walks and four hits. Sprong had an RBI single and Hanmann a three-run double during the inning. St. Norbert added two runs in the fifth inning, while Alverno plated six in its half of the inning.
The Green Knights finished with six hits. Schmidt and Engwall each scored three runs, with Engwall finishing with five runs batted in. Johanek picked up her second win of the day, allowing one run on two hits in three innings pitched.
