(ST. NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) – DE PERE – St. Norbert College continued Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play with a doubleheader against Concordia University Chicago, winning 10-3 and losing 6-3 at Miron Construction Field.
The Green Knights (10-10, 2-2 NACC) scored in five of six at-bats in the opener behind a 13-hit attack.
St. Norbert scored three runs in the first inning on a Grendel Sprong RBI single and two runs coming around on an outfield error. The Green Knights added a run in the second inning when Elly Kirst (pictured) led off with a double and Sprong drove in another run with a single. St. Norbert went ahead 5-0 on a Kirst sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Sophia Nieckula.
The Cougars scored once in the top of the fifth but St. Norbert responded with three runs in the fifth. Sprong’s sacrifice fly brought in a run and a throwing error on the play plated another. The third run scored on another Concordia error. Concordia scored twice in the sixth inning but the Green Knights rounded out the scoring in their half of the frame on a two-run single by Kirst.
Kirst finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Sprong was 3-for-3 with a run scored and three runs batted in. Magdeline Hanmann was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Allison Ardito was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Addison Luebke picked up the win with 4 1/3 innings pitched in relief, allowing seven its with two walks and five strikeouts.
In the nightcap, both teams scored two runs in the first inning. Ardito had an RBI single and Ava Engwall had an run-scoring groundout to knot the score at 2-2. The Cougars scored one run in the fourth inning and three runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-2 lead. St. Norbert scored its final run on a Sprong RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to bring around Morgan Jarvi.
Jarvi was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Sprong and Ardito were also both 2-for-4. Amber Johanek took the loss in relief, allowing one run on four hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched.
