GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Emergency crews responded Sunday after a tour bus drove over an embankment and nearly hit a building in Green Bay.
The Green Bay Police Department says they were dispatched just before 2:45 p.m. to North Webster Avenue near the northbound I-43 exit for the crash, which involved more than 50 passengers.
Officials say the tour bus was coming from Chicago and heading to a casino in Michigan. When exiting I-43, the bus drove over an embankment, which police estimated to be about 4 or 5 feet, and eventually came to a stop in between two nearby warehouses.
It’s unclear what caused the crash, but video footage from a vehicle driving behind the bus is being reviewed by police.
Police say they will determine if charges will be filed against the bus driver.
EMS personnel say no one was killed in the crash. They add 33 people on the bus have non-life-threatening injuries and were transferred to local hospitals.
Of the 33 injured, 2 are in critical condition.
The Green Bay Metro Fire Department added that at one point, there were no more available EMS vehicles in Green Bay. They were assisted by surrounding departments like Luxemburg and De Pere to help transport patients.
Those who were uninjured were taken to the Kroc Center to be picked up and reunited with family. Later, as passengers were discharged from hospitals, they were also transported to the Kroc Center. Individuals seeking to contact someone who was on the bus should call 211.
Major Catherine Fitzgerald, The Salvation Army of Greater Green Bay Area Coordinator, said in a statement:
“We are grateful that our Emergency Disaster Team was ready to serve. We were able to open our Kroc Center and provide a place for the bus riders to be safe, rest, and await a return bus. We were able to provide food, water, coffee, and a team ready to serve.”
