(ST NOBERT COMMUNICATIONS) MELBOURNE, Fla. – St. Norbert College continued its strong start in its annual trip to Florida, defeating Hamilton College 5-2 before downing Western Connecticut State 5-1 in two non-conference games.
The Green Knights (4-4) avenged losses to both the Continentals and Wolves from last season at the Space Coast Games as St. Norbert now strides on a three-game win streak.
St. Norbert broke through early in the first inning with Elly Kirst scoring on a passed ball before Hamilton tied the game in the same frame. Sophia Nieckula scored on a second passed ball in the second, while a Grendel Sprong double scored Kirst for her second run of the game.
Hamilton closed the game in the fifth to make it 3-2, but two runs with the bases loaded in the sixth put St. Norbert up 5-2.
Elly Kirst led the Green Knights with two hits an an RBI. Five others had one hit for St. Norbert. Addison Maurer earned the win, pitching six innings with one strikeout and allowing two runs on eight hits. Amber Johnaek (pictured) picked up her second save of the season, pitching one inning in relief and allowing no runs.
Against Western Connecticut, the Green Knights scored two of their opening three runs on fielding errors from the Wolves. A Sprong triple in the second inning made it 4-0 before the Wolves responded with a run in the fourth on a wild pitch. Sprong’s second RBI of the game in the same frame scored Molly Reichenberger as the Green Knights held on to a 5-1 victory.
Sprong had two hits and two RBIs while Emma Schmidt had one hit and an RBI.
Alyson Clarke picked up her first win of the season with four innings pitched, striking out three and allowing one run on four hits. Addison Luebke earned the save, pitching three innings and striking out one while allowing just one hit.
