(WNFL) – The Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team won the Horizon League conference tournament on Tuesday to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament.
The Phoenix defeated Youngstown State 57-49.
Phoenix coach Kayla Karius talked about the win.
Karius is also excited about the team’s NCAA tournament potential.
Neither team shot particularly well as they both shot 38 percent.
Youngstown State was 20-of-52 while Green Bay was 21-of-56.
The difference was at the free throw line where the Phoenix were 12-of-19 compared to 3-of-6 for the Penguins.
Karius said that the key for the Phoenix is that they play well together.
Jenna Guyer led the Phoenix with 21 points. Maddie Skorupski added 13 points.
Skorupski and Kamy Peppler both had 6 rebounds with Peppler also contributing 8 assists.
Youngstown State was led by Paulina Hernandez and Sophia Gregory who score 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Trailing by 43-42 with 7:o2 left in the game, the Phoenix went ahead on a pair of free throws by Jenna Guyer which started a 15-6 run for Green Bay over the rest of the game. Guyer then made a 3-point play off a Penguins’ turnover, making a layup and free throw for a 47-43 lead.
Maddy Skorupski made it 49-43 on a jumper with Peppler making a driving layup for a 51-43 lead.
