GREEN LAKE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll is retiring.
Podoll announced Monday in a news release that he will not seek re-election. His current term expires next Jan. 4.
Podoll has been sheriff for 20 years and has spent 44 total years in law enforcement.
In his announcement, he wrote:
It is time to start a new chapter in my life. I have accomplished my goals. The most important of which was the desire to build a Sheriff’s Office that was respected by the citizens of Green Lake County.
Podoll recently gained attention for his department’s solving of the 2024 case of Ryan Borgwardt, who faked his death on Green Lake and fled to Europe. The sheriff’s office eventually convinced Borgwardt to return home, and he spent time in jail for obstruction of justice.
Last year, Podoll was honored as Sheriff of the Year by the Badger State Sheriffs’ Association.
