GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A second complaint against an animal shelter that took in homeless people in extreme cold weather was unfounded, city officials say.
The complaint against Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary was filed regarding the condition of the interior of the building Monday. Cheryl Renier-Wigg of the Community and Economic Development Department said the investigation in that case determined the complaint was unfounded.
A previous complaint did find violations, but those have since been resolved and the complaint has been closed, Renier-Wigg said. No citations or fines were ever issued.
Safe Haven employees say they met with city officials Monday regarding people staying in their shelter overnight during the recent deep freeze, in exchange for volunteer work. After the city issued ordinance violations, the story went viral on social media.
A Safe Haven employee says the unhoused people who had been staying at Safe Haven were staying in hotels. When asked whether the shelter would seek the proper permits to serve as an emergency shelter in the future, employees said the arrangement was only supposed to be for temporary during the extreme cold weather.
