SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — If you get a phone call claiming you have an active warrant or you need to make a payment to law enforcement, it’s a scam, Shawano police say.
The police department says the dispatch center has been “flooded” with reports of a scam in the area.
Police recommend:
- Do not trust caller ID alone, since scammers can “spoof” phone numbers to make it appear they are calling from someone else’s number.
- Be suspicious of callers who demand payment or personal information over the phone. Government offices, banks and utilities will not pressure you for gift cards, wire transfers or personal information over the phone.
- Pause and verify before you act. Take a moment and talk to a trusted family member or friend. If you suspect a scam, hang up and call a phone number for the organization you know is real.
