APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A nonprofit health insurance provider is investing $400,000 to strengthen care in the Fox Valley.
Local organizations are using the grant from Medica to create a road map for access to health care in the region. The initiative aims to build a health equity framework that considers the social drivers of health — language access, food insecurity and other barriers — through deep partnerships with grassroots organizations.
“Making sure that there is equity, and people are elevated, they’re educated and they’re empowered — that is at the core of what we do at Medica,” said Josh Gustafson, Wisconsin market president at Medica.
To ensure culturally-responsive outreach and training, collaborators will include the Partnership Community Health Center, Multicultural Coalition, Inc., NEW HMong and People of Progression.
“It supports the work that we’re doing at the community level by having community health workers embedded into culturally-based organizations, like NEW HMong and Multicultural Coalition, to really impact the community health of our area,” said Trish Sarvela, chief development officer at Partnership Community Health Center. “We know that by going deep into the community, we’re able to really address the barriers to care that people have.”
Partnership Community Health Center has been around for nearly three decades. Last year, it served 18,000 individuals at its Appleton, Oshkosh and Waupaca sites.
