GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Federal funding may help fill a gap in the financing plan for Green Bay’s new fire station and administration headquarters.
The city plans to combine operations from the closed Station 1 and outdated Station 3, as well house administrative offices there.
However, in December, city officials said project costs had grown to $19 million, about $4 million than anticipated. As a result, the city was considering reducing the size the project. Now, it appears that won’t be necessary.
A new federal spending bill includes $5 million for the project, Mayor Eric Genrich said Tuesday.
“I’m deeply grateful to (U.S. Rep. Tony Wied, R-8th District) and (U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisconsin) for this critical investment in our public safety infrastructure,” Genrich said in a news release. “This federal support comes at a critical time as we work to replace the now-closed Fire Station 1 and outdated Fire Station 3 with a modern facility that will serve our community for decades to come.”
City officials are working to finalize project plans and funding arrangements with a goal of breaking ground this summer.
Baldwin’s office said three other Northeast Wisconsin projects are also included in the bill:
- $1 million to the Boys & Girls Club Fox Valley for mental and behavioral health issues
- $480,000 to Veterans 1st of NEW for the construction of affordable housing
- $125,000 to Skanikulat Inc. for preserving and expanding access to the Oneida language
