PESHTIGO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A man is facing charges for bringing a loaded gun and knives to a school blood drive, then attacking police officers after he escaped from his handcuffs.
It all started shortly before 11:45 a.m. Monday, when a student working at a blood drive hosted at Peshtigo High School called 911 to report “a suspicious male party who was possibly carrying a gun on his person.”
According to a news release, “The student said a male subject was acting ‘strange’ and appeared to be over friendly with the student and another female juvenile who was also working the blood drive. The caller/student said the male party also appeared to have a ‘bulging’ item tucked on the side, under his shirt, that she suspected was a gun.”
When officers arrived, they located the man inside the gymnasium. He was moved into a private office, where he was temporarily detained and searched. Police discovered a handgun loaded with one magazine tucked inside the man’s shirt, as well as two knives.
Trevor Salwesky, 33, from Menominee, Michigan, was arrested and transported to the Marinette County Jail.
Upon arrival at the jail, authorities say Salwesky was able to get himself out of his handcuffs without the officers’ knowledge. At that point, he “attacked and assaulted” several police officers. Salwesky was then tased.
The news release says recommended charges against Salwesky are as follows:
- Possession of a dangerous weapon at school
- Possession of a firearm on school grounds
- Battery to a correctional officer by a prisoner
- Battery to a police officer
- Prisoner attempted escape
- Two counts of resisting an officer
- Disarming a police officer
- Disorderly conduct
All students and staff at the middle/high school were temporarily locked down as a result of the blood drive incident, but operations later resumed as normal.
Police say Salwesky acted alone and there is no further danger to the public or the school.
“Peshtigo PD wants to thank the school administration, staff and students who made the observations and placed the call for emergency response. Obviously, this incident could have been much worse and we are thankful it was not,” the release states.
