Kenneth Nelson (Calumet Co. Jail)
CHILTON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Kenneth Nelson was charged with first-degree intentional homicide for allegedly killing a family member at a Brillion home Wednesday night, although he says it was self-defense.
A judge ordered a competency exam after the issue was raised by both the prosecutor and defense attorney.
Nelson, 40, is charged with killing a 66-year-old relative. Police said the cause of death appeared to be blunt force trauma to the head.
When asked by the judge if he had read the criminal complaint, Nelson said: “Not guilty in self-defense is what I read.”
Calumet County District Attorney Nathan Haberman said Nelson has a history of delusion and schizophrenia. Defense attorney Paul Zilles also raised the issue of competency, which is Nelson’s ability to understand the court proceedings and assist in his own defense.
Judge Carey Reed set a $2 million cash bond, then ordered a competency exam. Nelson returns to court Feb. 24 to review the results of the psychiatric exam.
