GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Green Bay’s long-awaited Public Market has gotten yet another extension.
Originally announced in 2022, the project has already been extended three times.
Construction for the project is now required to be completed by the end of 2027.
“I think it’s important to note that there isn’t any local taxpayer money that’s been sent to that project as of yet. There is a TIF incentive that’s associated with it, but that’s a PAYGO situation. So, if that development doesn’t happen, then there’s no payment that’s sent over to them. Only if the tax value is increased do they receive that increment,” said Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich.
About $5.5 million is still needed to bring a public market to Green Bay. On Broadway says $21.7 million is pledged to the project, with the budget currently sitting at $27.2 million. The plan to close that gap is to secure $2.25 million from two state grants, $2 million in federal tax credits and about $1.25 million in donations.
$2.1 million in government funding has been pledged to the project. However, it has only received $500,000 from a city façade grant.
Developers have until May 1, 2026, to prove they have the funding to complete the project.
