MEN’S BASKETBALL
RIVER FOREST, Ill. – St. Norbert College recovered from a chilly shooting start and went on to post a 64-54 win over Dominican University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Igini Sports Forum.
The Green Knights (12-4, 9-0 NACC) remained in first place by one game over Aurora University midway through the conference schedule. Aurora topped Milwaukee School of Engineering to snap a deadlock for second place.
St. Norbert held Dominican scoreless for the game’s first six-plus minutes but had build just an 8-0 lead in doing so. The Green Knights led 16-5 midway through the first half after a Ryan Brown (pictured) 3-pointer but the Stars would slowly work their way back into the game and tie it 25-25 at halftime.
The Green Knights opened the second half on a 7-0 to take control, with a pair of Mason Freiburger baskets sandwiched around a Ryan Cox conventional three-point play. Dominican would get to within 41-38 with 11:32 left, but a quick 7-0 run on a pair of Freiburger hoops bracketing a Brown trey pushed the lead to 48-38 with 9:56 left. St. Norbert would lead 60-47 with 4:37 left and the Stars would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
St. Norbert shot 46.4 percent (26-for-56) from the floor in the second half, including 16-for-28 (57.1 percent) in the second half. Freiburger scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double. Brown netted a career-high 14 points, while Connor Pytleski added 11 points.
Dominican shot 31.4 percent (16-for-51) from the floor. Frank Paszkowski and Elijah Daugherty led the Stars with 16 points apiece.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
RIVER FOREST, Ill. – St. Norbert College posted a season-best opponent low point total with a 57-38 win over Dominican University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Igini Sports Forum.
The Green Knights (9-5, 9-0 NACC) turned in their best defensive effort of the season holding the Stars to 26.1 percent (12-for-46) shooting from the floor, including 1-for-14 (7.1 percent) in the first quarter as the visitor jumped out to a 13-3 lead after 10 minutes.
St. Norbert opened the game on an 11-0 run, keyed by a conventional three-point play from Marnie Kahl and a 3-pointer from Reese Sellers. The Green Knights held their lead in the low double digits for most of the second quarter before settling on a 27-15 halftime lead.
Dominican trailed 29-18 early in the third quarter before Oakley Witteck converted a trio of turnovers into baskets. Kahl splashed a 3-pointer at the 5:48 mark for a 38-19 lead and later finished a layup late in the period for a 47-25 edge with 10 minutes to play. Olivia Conway and Taylor Thiry (pictured) opened the fourth quarter with a pair of 3-pointers, the latter leading to the Green Knights’ largest lead of the game at 53-25 with 8:24 to go.
St. Norbert shot 41.5 percent (22-for-53) from the floor. Kahl had 14 points, while Witteck added 13 points. Thiry scored 11 points to give her 1,179 for her career, moving her from 11th place to ninth on St. Norbert’s career scoring list.
Dominican was led by Lia Saunders and Xi Le O’Neill, who each had eight points.
MEN’S HOCKEY
DE PERE – St. Norbert College got the benefit of a late goal to pick up a hard-fought 2-1 win over Concordia University Wisconsin to salvage a split of a home-and-home Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series at Cornerstone Community Center.
Jack Christen (pictured, center) scored with 1:24 remaining to break a 1-1 stalemate. Logan Dombrowsky saucered a pace through the slot and hit a crashing Christen, who finished with the eventual game-winning goal. Concordia had an extra attacker for the game’s final 56 seconds but never seriously threatened with an equalizer.
St. Norbert scored the game’s first goal when Dombrowsky scored bar down at the 11:33 mark of the first period. That goal held up until Concordia tied things up on Matt Green’s goal at 8:30 of the third period.
Dombrowsky finished with the Green Knights’ lone multi-point game with one goal and one assist for two points.
St. Norbert outshot Concordia 32-24, including 25-12 over the last two periods. Vaughn Makar picked up the win in net for the Green Knights, making 23 saves. Cameron Hrdlicka made 30 stops for the Falcons.
St. Norbert was 0-for-4 on the power play, while Concordia was 0-for-3.
