(WTAQ-WLUK) — Brown County says it saw a drop in traffic deaths in 2025 and is aiming for zero fatalities in 2026.
According to the Brown County Traffic Safety Commission’s data, Brown County had 11 traffic fatalities in 10 crashes in 2025. By comparison, there were 19 deaths in 16 crashes in 2024.
The most deaths occurred during the fourth quarter of 2025 which includes the months of October, November and December.
“It’s a relief knowing fewer families mourned the loss of a loved one last year,” said Brown County Sheriff’s Office Capt. John Rousseau. “Yet, our goal remains zero deaths. Whether it is a teen driver or an elderly motorist, we want everyone to get home alive in 2026 and beyond.”
The report notes several recurring factors in the traffic deaths:
- Speeding: A factor in many of 2025’s most severe incidents.
- Seat Belt Use: Several victims did not wear their seat belt.
- Impaired Driving: Drunk or drugged driving played a role in several deadly crashes.
Preliminary numbers show similar declines across the state. Wisconsin traffic deaths fell from 576 in 2024 to 536 in 2025.
Crash data isn’t finalized for a particular calendar year until several months into the following year.
The commission encourages all drivers to slow down, buckle up, and drive sober.
