GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A person had to be rescued from an early morning house fire on Green Bay’s west side.
Green Bay Metro Fire Chief Matthew Knott says crews were called to the 1100 block of Royal Blvd. just after 6 a.m. Thursday.
A neighbor noticed the fire and called for help.
When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the roof.
Knott says two people from inside the home were outside. They told firefighters a third person was trapped in the basement.
Firefighters went inside, where they were met with flames and smoke. They were able to rescue the trapped person.
Knott says all three people were taken to local hospitals. Their conditions are not known at this time.
Knott says the home sustained significant damage, including incidents of floors collapsing.
Slippery roads had some impact on firefighters getting to the scene, but Knott says crews train for these types of conditions. The fire department also said crews had to work around a downed power line in the backyard that was sparking.
The fire was officially contained by 7:40 a.m.
Knott encourages anyone to have a fire escape plan and working smoke detectors.
It’s not known at this time if the home had working smoke detectors.
The cause of the fire and where it specifically began in the home are still under investigation.
