DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A De Pere art center is removing its entry fees to make art accessible to all this holiday season.
Thanks to a gift from Miriam and James Mulva, beginning Wednesday, a new pricing model at the Mulva Cultural Center will go into effect. All exhibitions and most films will be complimentary to all visitors.
Exhibitions like Life in Space — currently in the main exhibition hall through Jan. 5 — and films in the Discover Auditorium were previously subject to a fee for Mulva Cultural Center visitors.
Now, all exhibitions and most films will only require a timed ticket for entry, which can be reserved online. Certain specialty films require a distributor-set fee, which is determined independently of the Mulva Center team.
“When we were opening two years ago, that was a topic of discussion. Initially, we intended to be free to start the process, but in talking to other organizations and operations, we were convinced to have a nominal fee for both the exhibitions and for films,” said Mulva Cultural Center Executive Director Marvin Wall. “This summer, we had different events that we had as free events and were very popular, so we just want to expand who we can have in the building and have this be a larger and a bigger gift for the community.
The new pricing model is also reflected in Mulva Cultural Center memberships, which are now offered in three tiers. Memberships will now include more member-exclusive events, programs and discounts than the previous membership structure.
Those who were Mulva Cultural Center members prior to Monday will receive a complimentary four-month extension to their membership. New members will be on the standard 12-month period.
The first member-exclusive event will take place at the end of January for the opening of the next main hall exhibition, The Real Genghis Khan. This exclusive members-only preview will take place over three days at the end of January before opening to the public.
“Having experiences for members is important to us,” Wall said. “The Genghis Khan event, when we bring that exhibition in, we’re having four members from Mongolia here for the opening event to open that exhibition so they can interact with and have a special time for members to do that.”
The Real Genghis Khan will be on display through May 3.
