(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) GREEN BAY – Four Phoenix scored in double figures as the Green Bay Women’s basketball team moved to 2-0 in the Horizon League after winning 56-47 against Youngstown State at the Kress Center Sunday afternoon.
The Phoenix (7-4) was led by 22 points and eight rebounds from Meghan Schultz and another 11 points from both Jenna Guyer and Gracie Grzesk, while Maddy Skorupski added 10 points of her own. Schultz was 8-of-14 from the field, including 6-7 on free throws.
Casey Santoro was the lone Penguin in double figures, leading Youngstown State with 17 points and seven rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jenna Guyer was hot out of the gate, scoring the game’s first five points to give the Phoenix a 5-0 advantage. However, it was a 15-3 run highlighted by two threes from Santoro to put Youngstown State ahead before first quarter’s end at 15-11.
Green Bay trailed for most of the second quarter until six straight Schultz points in the last two and a half minutes gave GB a 26-23 lead heading into the half. Green Bay outscored Youngstown State 15-8 in the quarter.
The Phoenix would hold the lead for the remainder of the game, as Green Bay made their first six buckets of the second half in the paint before a Maddy Skorupski three cushioned the Phoenix lead, which would sit at 43-35 at the third quarter buzzer.
The score remained 43-35 for the first three minutes. The two teams exchanged baskets once more with Youngstown State remaining close throughout the fourth quarter, but it was seven fourth-quarter points for Green Bay native Gracie Grzesk to help the Phoenix hold on for the 56-47 win to move the Phoenix to 7-4 and 2-0 in league play.
