(WTAQ-WLUK) — The Wisconsin Department of Justice released the name of the police officer and driver in a Marinette County death investigation.
Niagara Police Department Officer Rhianna Carne, with two years law enforcement experience, is on administrative leave, per the agency’s policy.
The driver, 57-year-old Steve Mecklenburg, is accused of fleeing a traffic stop initiated by Officer Carne on Nov. 5. While driving away at a high rate of speed, Mecklenburg hit a commercial vehicle in the 1000 block of Main Street.
Aid was immediately rendered but Mecklenburg was pronounced deceased on scene. Nobody else was injured during the incident.
DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over the investigative reports to the Marinette County District Attorney’s Office when the investigation concludes.
