GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Green Bay School board has voted to terminate the contract of Niko Sila.
Sila was Green Bay East High School’s Manager of engagement, attendance and advocacy; and also the head coach of the varsity football team.
Sila was put on administrative leave Oct. 16 after several allegations were outlined against him.
During Wednesday’s meeting, those allegations were narrowed down to three, including:
- 1. Intentionally falsifying attendance records
- 2. Transporting students in his personal vehicle without proper documentation
- 3. Failure to comply with investigatory rules
According to the district, the falsified attendance records allowed ineligible athletes to compete in WIAA sanctioned events. Including as many as 11 athletes during East’s football game on Oct. 11. Sila maintains that he did not falsify attendance records.
Sila says he did give students rides home, but that he did it out of concern for their safety. According to the district, “Despite not completing the driver authorization process, Mr. Sila continued to drive students in his private vehicle.”
For failure to comply with investigatory rules, the district is referring to Sila breaking a no contact order after he was placed on administrative leave. Sila says he never directly reached out to students, and only responded briefly when they reached out to him.
Students, parents, and the community showed up in support of Sila; many of whom noted the positive impact Sila has had on them.
Now that he wont be at East High School anymore, Sila says he’s worried for the students.
“I was able to be there and guide them for those seven-eight hours; in hopes that every blueprint that we created, that they’d have a better version of themself with the choices they would make while working with me,” said Sila after the meeting. “But now, I feel like I gotta step my game up even more now, even being terminated. I’m still gonna try to make sure these kids get their needs, and to be able to overcome the struggle that they have in their life.”
Now, Sila says he’s working towards a youth mentorship program he plans on calling Forgiven Mentoring LLC.
“Every kid deserves the opportunity to be forgiven, no matter how people see them. Whatever words that they call our kids, they call them thugs, and stuff like that. Well, not at my mentoring place. You’re gonna be called somebody that can make a change, and a difference in your life.”
Though his employment was terminated, there’s a possibility Sila’s story in the district isn’t quite finished yet. Before the board reached it’s final decision, Sila said that if he’s terminated, he will run for school board in the spring. he again reiterated that intention after the meeting.
The final vote to terminate Sila’s employment was 5-2, with Alex Mineau and Andrew Becker voting to keep Sila employed in the district.
After the meeting, the district released the following statement:
The Green Bay Area Public School District Board of Education voted to terminate the employment of Manager of Student Engagement, Attendance and Advocacy and East Football Coach Kominiko Sila. The termination was based on the following verified misconduct following a thorough investigation:
Intentional falsification of student attendance records. On more than 140 occasions, from September 5, 2025 through October 15, 2025, Niko Sila knowingly deleted accurate and official student absence records from the District’s student record systems, Infinite Campus. These actions resulted in false student attendance records that were relied upon for athletic participation eligibility, and School and District reporting requirements for the purpose of state report cards and a federal grant that East currently receives; and interfered with system absence notification to parents, and prevented attendance interventions to be triggered and implemented.
Unauthorized transportation of students without complying with Board Policy, which is based on state law. Sila repeatedly transported students in his personal vehicle while refusing to complete the required vehicle inspection and driver’s license background check. These requirements are applicable to all District staff who transport non-relative students using personal vehicles, and are in place for student safety. Despite prior disciplinary action, Sila refused to fulfill the minimum requirements and continued to transport students.
Because of the more than 140 deletions of student absences, ineligible players competed in a number of football games this season, including the September 5, 2025 East vs. Sheboygan South game, the October 3, 2025 East vs. Sheboygan North game, and the October 17, 2025 East vs. West game.
