ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Members of the public are invited to come out and welcome home veterans who take part in an honor flight next month.
The Stars & Stripes Flight of Champions is expected to include 160 Vietnam-era veterans, plus a handful of veterans ranging from the Korean War to the post-Vietnam era. The flight is sponsored by the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers and Bucks. Former players are scheduled to take part.
One plane leaves from Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport and two from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport on Nov. 1.
The veterans will travel to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials to the wars they fought in and the fellow servicemembers lost in those wars.
Members of the public are invited to gather at Austin Straubel at 7:30 p.m. to give the veterans a welcome home that many of them did not receive when they returned from service. The concourse is expected to open around 6 p.m. Parking in the airport’s long-term parking lot will be free.
