FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — After a 10-day trial, a jury convicted a teenager Friday for his role in the deadly shooting of a woman in Fond du Lac.
Parise Larry, now 16, was 14 years old at the time of the May 2023 shooting at the Maplewood Commons apartment complex. His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 19.
Larry faced 17 charges and was convicted on eight counts, according to Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney. Those are:
- First degree intentional homicide, as party to a crime, with a dangerous weapon in a school zone
- Attempted first degree intentional homicide, as party to a crime, with a dangerous weapon in a school zone
- First degree reckless injury, as party to a crime, with a dangerous weapon in a school zone
- Four counts of first degree recklessly endangering safety, as party to a crime, with a dangerous weapon in a school zone
- Child in possession of a dangerous weapon.
Larry’s co-defendant in the case, 19-year-old Antonio Johnston, was 17 when the shooting occurred. Early this year, he pleaded guilty to all eight counts he faced, including being party to the crime of first-degree intentional homicide. His sentencing date has not been set.
“This was a horrific example of Chicago-style violence in our community, with both co-defendants having grown up in Chicago,” Toney said in a news release. “We will continue to aggressively prosecute violent crime in our community, regardless of age, to ensure we have safe streets.
The criminal complaint says Larry and Johnston had been involved in a dispute with an 18-year-old man at the apartment complex. That man, who was shot in the upper body and hospitalized, told investigators he believed he was the target.
The complaint says the conflict started when Johnston exchanged words with the man on the complex grounds. Following that exchange, the complaint says the man began walking toward Johnston. That’s when Johnston is seen on security camera footage pulling out a pistol and firing multiple rounds toward the man.
Police say Larry also fired shots at the man. During his trial, Larry claimed he acted in self-defense.
Security cameras captured 20-year-old Tatyanna Zech falling to the ground as the shots rang out and everyone else running away. Zech was an innocent bystander simply taking out the garbage, and was not involved in the dispute.
The complaint goes on to say the supposed target was running away when he turned and fired at least one shot back towards Johnston. At some point, he was shot and injured.
A retaliatory shooting occurred two weeks after the initial murder. Two men have since been convicted and sentenced in that case.
