HOBART, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The village of Hobart has officially voted to approve purchasing property for a new municipal building.
The village says the land — currently owned by Joe DeNoble Sewer and Water Construction — is the ideal spot.
“You’ve got size, you’ve got location, you’ve got availability, and again, the financing, which fits right in,” said Hobart Village Board President Richard Heidel.
The move will cost the village $6.2 million, and another $4 million will be spent on building costs. However, some in the community are concerned about the cost.
“I think you could build this site, purchase the land for far less than $6 million,” said Al Sprague, a Hobart resident.
“We’re not purchasing the land for $6 million. It’s the land and the improvements,” responded Hobart Village Administrator Aaron Kramer.
Heidel says the village will have earnest payments from their capital budget over the next couple years to the seller, and they won’t have to look at bonding for this project until 2028.
“During the next two or three years when we’re doing that, our current debt service will diminish. If I’m not mistaken, I think it’s about $3-4 million. Of course, as the previous debt services dropped off, we’ll be able to assume new debt and even additional debt if necessary. But nowhere near what our debt capacity is, or our levy limits allow. Not an issue at all,” said Heidel.
Wednesday’s vote was delayed two weeks ago to ensure all board members could be present.
“Not only were all five of us here, but I asked for a roll call vote. So, there’s no question in anybody’s mind where any of us stands on this,” said Heidel.
The new property would be used for a new law enforcement center, a new village office and a new public works facility. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2028.
