GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Green Bay Area Public School District began checking student backpacks today as they entered school.
It comes after a loaded handgun was found inside a student’s backpack at Preble High School last week on Tuesday.
Students reported that there were long lines out the door at the start of the school day for bag checks.
District officials said student bag checks went smooth but there were some minor delays in getting students to class.
Starting Monday, Sept. 22, all students in grades 6-12 will be required to use a clear backpack or tote bag. Otherwise they will have to empty out their traditional backpacks.
The district also announced a roundtable discussion tonight at Preble High School to allow community members to share feedback and recommendations for safety improvements. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria.
