The Wisconsin DNR reports widespread Unhealthy (Red) AQI for PM2.5 is expected across the state Thursday, with NowCast AQI values in the Very Unhealthy (Purple) category possible.
“PM2.5 is a general term for a mixture of solid and liquid droplets suspended in the air, and a main source is combustion or burning-related activities, so that’s going to release a lot of those fine particles in the air,” said Craig Czarnecki with Wisconsin DNR Air Management.
He continues, “The 2.5 stands for 2.5 micrometers or less — very, very teeny tiny, 20 or 30 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair — so very, very tiny particles. And these are inhalable, so they can get into your lungs and cause a number of different problems.”
Sensitive groups should consider rescheduling or moving all activities inside. As for everyone else, keep outdoor activities shorter and less intense. Go inside if you have symptoms.
People with asthma should keep quick-relief medicine handy.
Anyone with heart disease should be aware that symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath or unusual fatigue may indicate a serious problem. If you have any of these symptoms, contact your health care provider.
