GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — After 18 years at the helm of the Green Bay Packers, Mark Murphy has officially retired.
The organization’s longtime president/CEO handed off the reigns to his successor, Ed Policy, during Friday’s shareholders’ meeting at Lambeau Field.
Murphy, a former NFL player and college athletic director, is stepping down because he reached the club’s mandatory retirement age of 70 earlier this month.
During Murphy’s time as the leader of the Pack, his team boasted 11 playoff appearances and even won a Super Bowl in the 2010-11 season. But Murphy’s influence and impact has always been about much more than just the scoreboard.
July 25, 2025 was officially declared “Mark Murphy Day” in the city of Green Bay. Mayor Eric Genrich issued a proclamation to Mark Murphy during a private breakfast Friday morning.
For 17 seasons, Murphy has led the green and gold front office. While his efforts are appreciated on the football side of things, it was giving back to the Green Bay community that Murphy loved most.
“The support that he’s given us to allow us to do not only our job, but look at all the resources the organization has invested back into this team. It’s pretty incredible. I’ve never been a part of anything like this,” said Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.
It was Murphy’s vision and work in the community that so many will remember.
“He led in his unique and special way. Obviously not from the area, but I think the thing that really resonated with me and with a lot of people is just his humble way of going about the business and taking the team in new directions, but just being able to relate to the community in a way we all appreciate,” added Genrich.
Murphy’s leadership on the Titletown development left a lasting impression on the Green Bay area.
“Titletown was, I think that’s his thing. The team has done well, but Titletown, that’s unbelievable. It’s pretty cool,” said fan Gary Pawlak.
His wife, Nancy, added, “He’s done a lot for the city, he’s done a lot for the Packers. Titletown is great.”
Murphy also partnered with the Community Foundation to create Give Big Green Bay,
But making history by bringing the NFL Draft to Green Bay is something fans say they’ll never forget.
“I think the draft is going to end up going down as his legacy, even though it was in his last year and he did so much before that. But I think that just elevated the community in kind of the national scope of things, and it was amazingly put together,” said fan Anton Bommersbach.
As part of Mark Murphy Day, Genrich also gave Murphy a key to the city.
Policy has been with the Packers since 2012 and held the position of chief operating officer since 2018.
