Dajuan Deshazer (Wisconsin DOC)
MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A state appeals court Wednesday upheld Dajuan Deshazer’s conviction for the murder of an informant in a drug case against him.
Deshazer was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole, plus eight more years, for the May 19, 2017, murder of Robert Bauer.
For about a year before the shooting, Bauer had been acting as a confidential informant for the metro drug unit with the Manitowoc Police Department. Deshazer was one of the individuals, and the only African American man, on whom Bauer had informed.
Deshazer appealed, arguing several reasons why his trial counsel was ineffective and that, as a result, he should get a new trial.
But in a 13-page ruling Wednesday, the appeals court rejected those arguments.
“As explained above, there was nothing objectively unreasonable about trial counsel’s decisions and strategy. We previously concluded that trial counsel did not perform deficiently regarding the threat-text screenshot or by failing to object during the prosecutor’s closing arguments. We further ascertained no deficiency with regard to the failure to introduce specific evidence. We conclude that whether viewed separately or together, trial counsel’s alleged errors do not undermine our confidence in the outcome of Deshazer’s trial,” the opinion states.
Deshazer is currently housed at the Columbia Correctional Institution.
